Matter and language

Excerpts from the PhD thesis "Meias-tintas", defended by André Berger in 2026 at the Institute of Arts of Unicamp

“Working with printmaking entails a constant engagement with its materiality. At times, in following this path toward the engraved image — without leaving the workbench and without necessarily knowing what image I am searching for — I am led, in the best of these incursions, through obscure places, groping my way forward with the feeling that I have been there before, yet unable to fully recognize them, even knowing that I carry them within me. To excavate the subterranean images that may reveal themselves there, it is necessary to recognize the moment, when it presents itself, to silence rational and conscious thought — also indispensable — that organizes the language with which I am working. […]

The transformation of matter is the fundamental subject of my prints. Darkness, light, shadow and nuance; time, memory, cycles, finitude and transience; depth, surface, the mirror, multiplication and decomposition; nothingness, the infinitesimal and the infinite — there is a repertoire of ideas and concepts that the nature of work in drypoint and mezzotint printmaking leads me to associate, in the composition of images, so that they ultimately converge upon this theme.”
